Potential surviving participants in WW1
This is the list of all those men and women who we felt qualified as having a close connection to Sampford Peverell, and who were the right age to have possibly taken part in the war. Against each name we have put notes explaining where we found the reference to them, and whether we found evidence that they took part in the war or not. For those who did take part, more information is given elsewhere.
By 'a close connection' we felt they had to fall into at least one of these categories:
By 'a close connection' we felt they had to fall into at least one of these categories:
- they were born here
- they lived here at some point
- they enlisted from here
- they had close family here during the war
The St Boniface Home for Waifs and Strays was situated in Lower Town, and for the boys who lived there Sampford Peverell was their home. The Home tried to keep track of former residents who served in the war. The Children's Society have sent us a list of St Boniface participants in the war which was compiled in December 1916, so it does not include anyone after that. Also the home depended on hearing from old boys so they may not have heard about everyone who was involved. It is described as: ‘The Church of England Waifs and Strays Society’s Roll of Honour of Old Boys who have laid down their lives or are still serving their King and Country in His Majesty’s Navy and Army.’ Lists were also published in their magazine so we have some names from those lists. Dates against the names are for the various dates the rolls of honour were published. They include boys who had emigrated (been sent) to Canada, many of whom returned to fight with the Canadian contingent.
